candle safety & care

The first time you light your Green Planet candle is the most important.

Take your time. Relax and enjoy the ambience and fragrance your candle provides.

To get the most out of your candle, allow it to burn long enough until the molten/liquid wax reaches the edges of the container. This may take 2-4 hours or longer depending on the size of the container; it will also allow the fragrance to disperse fully around the room. Don't worry if there is a small build-up of wax remaining on the edge of the container as this will disappear on subsequent burns.

  • Always keep a burning candle within sight. Extinguish candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep, and be sure the wick ember is no longer glowing.

House Plants and Candle
  • Burning candles should be kept well away from anything that can catch fire such as curtains, bedding, magazines, newspapers or anything flammable such as decorations.

  • Keep candles & wax melts out of the reach of children and pets.

  • Position burning candles with at least one metre clearance above and at least 10 cm apart from one another. This ensures the candles have enough oxygen to burn effectively and don't cause their own drafts which may cause improper burning.

Always place candles or melt burners on a heat-resistant surface such as slate, ceramic or marble to avoid damage to furniture.

  • Leave your candle to cool and the wax to return to a solid state before handling or moving; a container can get hot, especially if it's been allowed to burn longer than the recommended time (see below).

  • The flame should be around 2.5 cm tall. If the flame is too tall or begins to smoke excessively, gently extinguish (using a wick dipper) and allow the wax to cool and return to a solid state, then trim the wick to 0.5cm before relighting.

  • Be sure the candle is placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface (not wood or cork). This can help prevent heat damage to underlying surfaces and prevent glass containers from breaking.

  • Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches and debris.

  • Do not burn candles continuously for more than 2 hours for a small votive (9cl) and no more than 4 hours continuous burn for 20cl container candles or larger. Burning longer than recommended may cause the container to crack.

  • Keep burning candles away from drafts, vents, ceiling fans and air currents. This will help prevent rapid, uneven burning, and avoid flame flare-ups and soot. Drafts can also blow nearby lightweight items into the flame where they could catch fire.

  • Always burn candles in a well-ventilated room. Don't burn too many candles in a small room or in a "tight" home where air exchange is limited.

  • NEVER use water to extinguish a candle!  Water, oil and a naked flame do NOT mix! Water will cause the hot wax to splatter and explode which in turn will break the glass container. The best way to extinguish a flame is to use a wick dipper or wick snuffer. It prevents splatters of hot wax and will ensure no after-smoke. Alternatively, place a heat-resistant lid over the candle flame to extinguish. Visit Accessories for wick dippers and more!

WAX DISPOSAL

Rapeseed & coconut wax is biodegradable but it should never be poured into the drains, sink, basin or toilet waste where serious blockages will occur. Dispose of residual wax as follows:

  • When the candle has almost finished, leave about 0.5 cm of wax in the bottom of the container. Don't allow a candle to burn all the way down to the bottom of the glass vessel for safety reasons as the glass may crack.

  • Allow any remaining molten wax to cool down sufficiently ensuring it is still fairly soft and gently scoop out any remaining wax residue from the container with a small spoon or spatula.

  • Dispose the wax into a waste bin.

  • Wipe the inside of the container with a paper towel and wash in warm soapy water so it can be reused. The metal wick holder can be levered off gently with a spoon.

  • Post your empty 30cl container back to Green Planet Candle Co via the Refill service (excludes 20cl container candles) and receive a discount.
